2012 Lift Off Scholarship Winners Announced.
We are pleased to announce that two Lift Off Scholarships were issued in 2012 from the Gold Vault chapter.
The first candidate, Emily
Carmack, demonstrated academic excellence and outstanding
leadership ability in nearly every dimension. She is a Senior
at Assumption High
School who is planning to major in Chemical Engineering or Pharmacy.
Her
academic awards include McCauley Scholar Program (all Advanced
Placement
classes), Principal's List (4.0 GPA for 5 Semesters), Scholar Athlete
Award for Softball, Volunteer for Home of the Innocents, Habitat for
Humanity, Dare to Care Food Bank, and Library Advisory Council among
others.
"Ever
since I can remember, I loved to study Math. It was the one class that
I
looked forward to more than any other. Then,in high school, I
discovered
that I loved science as well, especially Chemistry and Physics. Both
subjects focus on finding a solution to a problem using facts and
numbers,
rather than opinions and words....I am planning to study Chemical
Engineering or Pharmacy because those majors will allow me to combine
my
favorite subjects with my desire to help people."
The second candidate, Landon
Wilcox, is a Senior at Central
Hardin High
School. He was recipient of several awards including
Distinguished in
Mathematics Award, Governor's Cup Math Award, Lincoln Trail Youth Salute
Leadership Award and First Place Winner of a Lego League Regional
Tournament. In addition, he participated in Severns Valley Baptist
Church youth group, taught Vacation Bible School, was an Upward Soccer
Coach, is a member of the Heartland Dulcimer Club and participated in an
ASEE High School Robot Competition. He states:
"Curiosity let me skip eighth grade, take college Calculus, Chemistry and Trigonometry at age fourteen, initiate dynamic discussions with professors, and challenge them to think beyond the usual by exploring possibilities with me. With a servant's heart, I see how society needs care with the growing sickness of not only the body, but also the mind. With my mathematical passion, and a desire to >research and create things with my hands, I will join my forces and become a Biomedical Engineer."
The AFCEA Ft Knox Gold Vault Chapter was established to foster innovation, encourage professional development and recognize academic achievement. Through the Lift Off Scholarship, our aim is to support future engineers and scientists in the Ft Knox community. In addition to the financial award they will also receive an AFCEA membership which will include a subscription to Signal magazine among other benefits. We plan to offer additional scholarships in the future.
